 S&S for Dark Sun
« Thread Started on Aug 13, 2009, 4:25pm »

I just realized that I should have posted something about this here.

I have been playing around with a conversion/reimagining of Dark Sun using S&S on the old blog. Going pretty well so far. I realize that my take on psionics may not match up with what Jason is doing for 12P, but I'm fairly pleased so far.

One thing that is proving a bump: Weapons vs. AC. The inclusion of this in S&S was one of the things that sold me on the game. Rather than the "too fiddly" thing that many people expect, I'm finding Weapon vs. AC works well. It's especially nice when stating out new monsters.

That said, I just can't resist fiddling with the chart (big surprise). Some things just don't strike me as quite right--maces ought to be notably better against plate mail than swords, as an example. And then I don't think having an Armour Class that includes armour + shield makes too much sense in this system.

I have feeling that this part is going to take a little while.

Finally, after way too long a time, I have gotten my little Dark Sun project to a point where I can post a playtest draft. Obviously incomplete, but it has enough to begin play and see how it works. The new step, dear hypothetical readers, is to actually play test it.

I have put the text of the document onto my website here and you can download a pdf copy there as well if you prefer.

Looks fantastic, Matt! And very similar to the way I'm doing psychic powers in 12p.

An update or two: having pretty well twisted up the setting to fit my vision, I ended up changing it from Dark Sun to something of my own, though obviously quite inspired by Dark Sun. I just posted the playtest version at my website, The Wheel of Samsara.

Also, I'm going to be running a PbP playtest over at rpg.net. if anyone wants in, let me know by posting there or PMing me.
