I agree. I'm glad to see that old school gaming is becoming more popular again and that there are more sites where we can go to discuss this stuff. Just goes to show that if I don't change but wait long enough then I'm stylish again. :-)

I of course am Jason, the author of S&S and president/owner/sole employee of the fledgling Elf Lair Games. Thanks for coming 'round and lending your support!

Every time I look at this book I get warm fuzzy feelings. ...maybe I'm just sick, but I like it anyway As for introductions - I'm mostly an LM of Gary Gygax's Lejendary Adventures, but I am also a supporter of this retro-clone and old guard renaissance. I do also like to try weird and new things including old things modified. WW2 also being a nice RPG playground. Y'know I hear some say that Castles & Crusades started it; I would beg to differ that it may have begun with HackMaster 4e. Any faults Kenzer may have, that game seemed to start the ball rolling. I can't speak for those who've undertaken the systems though, and I wouldn't want to. K

love S&S, got the PDF the other day - it's mint !
I'm Sean - I prefer rules-light games and have been roleplaying since the mid 80s, started on a house-ruled AD&D 1E campaign, then onto Dragon Warriors and Maelstrom. Recently played using Redbox Hack, Forward to Adventure! and Microlite20 Hard Core Rules. I'm pretty fickle but I know what I like - and I'm looking forward to my 1st game using this system.
keep up the good work ! ;D

Guess I should post a hello. As far as gaming goes, I started in 83 with the B/X books, and have played most any major rpg you can think of. I picked up the pdf of the revised S&S, and so far really like it. I'm also a fan of the other retro games, and CnC.
(also, I post as Chade on RPGNet and use danbuter1 on Dragonsfoot, so I've definitely "met" at least Jason online).

Hi Everyone!
Very happy to be here. Currently I play OD&D as laid out in Philotomy's Musings. The group consists of a lot of non-rpg gamer friends who like playing things like Catan, as well as some Diablo CRPG players who are in it for the loot. The common link is that all appreciate fantasy & history, and so a lite game of OD&D is something we can all enjoy and get into when we get together.
I support the retro clones by buying the material even though I don't specifically play those systems. First is I find them to be excellent references when I want to see how someone else treats a particular subject, or when there is something I am not sure about in our own game. Second is I am convinced these simpler systems, far from being nostalgic rehashes of primitive early game designs, are in fact they way forward for fantasy gaming. There is simply no way some of my friends (and myself for that matter) could sit down and play a 3E or 4E game. Yet we enjoy and appreciate fantasy. What we want is simpler game of exploration & reward, with a little fantasy mixed in there. I'm sure this sentiment could apply to a lot of people out there.
Anyways I've just discovered this S&S, and very interested to aquire the booklets and see how things are done. Particularly interested in the 2d6 Chainmail type combat, and the altered Vancian Magic System.
Cheers!

Welcome, islestrike! I think, given what you posted, that you'll really enjoy S&S. I prefer to think of the magic system as more "pseudo-Vancian" than altered Vancian. That is, spell casters do prepare spells in the morning, but don't necessarily forget them once they fire them. Rather, if they fail a spell casting check, they lose the spell energy for the day. And we took the Chainmail evolution a step farther, basing the entire system on the M2M combat from Chainmail.

Hey there everybody,
I just ordered both pocket editions of S&S today on Lulu. I must admit that I was one of the last few holdouts for the box set, but let Jason know that I would be going with the pocket editions instead.
Anyways, I've been playing rpg's for nearly 25 years and still know squat:-) Currently my group has been playing AD&D and a five year long Marvel FASERIP campaign.
I think the biggest thing that intrigued me about S&S was the 2d6 for combat and the pocket size books (I've been a sucker for the smaller formats after getting a Corgi T&T rulebook). My big plans for S&S is to play solo with some other materials that I have.

Hi there! My name is Benoist and I am the proud owner of S&S's Collector boxed set #13. I am a big fan of the game, and just found out about these message boards. I'm currently running a Dunfalcon OD&D/S&W campaign, and I talk about my return to the roots on my blog, the Citadel of Eight (link in my sig). I intend to run OSRIC in this sandbox as well, at some point, and certainly will run S&S when given the occasion. It's really nice to see a S&S-dedicated board around!

Welcome, benoist.
The boards have been slow of late due to the fact that I've been forced to put Elf Lair on hiatus; graduate school, work, and a freelance project have created too much work for me to handle as-is and something had to give.
But I'm hoping to be up and running again as soon as possible and it's nice to see some discussion going on.

Hello!
New to the boards just thought I'd put in my "official hello."
My gaming experience is limited to Palladium, D&D and AD&D. I would also say pretty much in that order. I'm a writer (sent you a PM Mr. Vey) who just recently published a small article in a quarterly gaming magazine.
Looking to join some discussions on here. So what can some of us do to help get the word out on this board?
