I was on a nostalgia kick and began looking at different OSR clones - many that are apparently very popular I'd never heard of. I thought it pretty much began and ended with 'Basic Fantasy.'
While looking through different versions, I saw some with interesting ideas and others where the more irritating (to me) OD&D rules are front and center. As I began to despair, I found a link to S&S, which after a bit of searching led me to the free Basic pdf.
Wow.
I've not seen the Chainmail rules or my White Box set in years (both lost in a move alas), but going through the basic set was a lot like coming home. It brought back many fond memories ... and answered any number of rules inconsistencies that quietly sat in the back of my mind for the last 20 years.
Sometimes you really do have to go back to the source material to see what OD&D was arguably intended to be - and what can still be. Fast. Fun. Creative. And yes, somewhat dangerous.
I've always been fond of 2d6 systems. Between that and the 'lite' nature of its rules I'm sold.
